Omanya Studio — Open Gallery Saturday — July Art 2025
The Omanya Leather Studio will be open for visits from 10:00-16:00 Discussion and demonstration with Eldad Bahar at 12 pm, 2:30 pm: “The Craft of Time – Between Tradition and Innovation” What do you do with leather? Create a journey through time. From the days of Babylon to the factories of the 21st century, the leather industry combines tradition and innovation at the same time. During July Art in the Western Galilee, an experiential demonstration meeting with Eldad Bahar will be held, which examines the roots of ancient leather craft and combines it with a contemporary approach. You will learn about traditional techniques for processing, cutting, sewing and stamping leather using tools that have been passed down from generation to generation, and discuss the question of what is chosen to be preserved and how industrial progress is changing the ways of working. In a live demonstration, you will learn how each piece of leather carries stories of time, and how it can be transformed into an innovative and personal item. In the workshop, you will receive historical insights into the leather industry: The role of leather work has been prevalent over time and during ancient times was an integral part of small urban spaces, and sometimes even of mosques or synagogues, and they had unique methods for dipping, dyeing and drying leather, which included the use of natural materials such as oak, plants and herbs. Today, modern technologies combine machines, new materials and automation methods, but the basic principles – preserving the fibers, creating strength and flexibility – have been preserved almost without profound change. From natural techniques to modern machines, we will discover what we have taken from these methods to innovate and preserve at the same time. About Omanya and Eldad Bahar: In the green Kibbutz Afek, 24 years ago, the artist Eldad Bahar founded a place where he created his handicrafts – fine leather crafts. Eldad began his leather work during his travels abroad out of love and interest in handicrafts. There he learned the secrets of the profession. At Omanya, Eldad holds workshops for leather creations for all ages. In the beautiful studio he opened, he teaches and guides groups, organizations, families, couples and individuals. During the workshop, each participant learns professional techniques for leather crafting, with which they will transform natural raw materials into useful products such as bracelets, wallets, belts, masks, flip-flops, cases or bags or any personal product of their choice. On site, you can also purchase Eldad’s variety of products, including bags, wallets, belts and other custom orders. All those interested in the craft have the opportunity to purchase all the tools and materials for self-work and receive professional advice and guidance. The place offers plenty of parking, a pastoral environment, a warm family atmosphere, a cup of coffee and personal attention to each guest. When?
