Ofek Ron-Carmel from Mitzpe Hila is a guide and geographical photographer, in love with the trip and adventure experience, he writes and photographs for “Masa” magazine and guides tours, lectures, and workshops in the Galilee and throughout the country. Dr. Shelley Anne Peleg is a tour guide, lecturer, and researcher in archaeology and the Land of Israel, who seeks to transform the encounter with heritage sites into a living encounter with human stories. All Picnic Spots

Liman Grove

In front of the entrance to Moshav Liman, a little south of Betzet Junction, you will find a shady and pleasant eucalyptus grove with picnic tables. The pleasant air coming from the sea and the shade of the spacious eucalyptus trees make the place a nice spot to stop and enjoy the Galilean tranquility.

Ahihud Forest

Whether you are looking for a view of the Galilee landscape, a pleasant place to sit for a picnic, an adventurous hiking trail or an experiential bicycle trip, Ahihud Forest is the place for you! On the road between Akko and Safed, in front of the entrance to the settlement of Gilon, you will find a scenic road along it with several observation points on the Carmel, the Zevulun Valley and Haifa Bay. Along the forest you will find neat parking lots with shaded picnic tables set in a natural grove of eucalyptus, oak and cypress. The benefactors among you will be able to go from there for a hike on the nearby Gamal Mountain and cycling enthusiasts will be able to go from there to the single Ahihud.

Tel Hanaton

Tel Hanaton is a successful destination for those looking for a short family trip or a coffee and picnic spot. Opposite the entrance to Kibbutz Hanaton, there is an turn to an impressive hill that rises above the Beit Netofa Valley and offers a view of the valley, Beit Rimon and the nearby Eshkol Reservoir. There are also remains of an ancient Crusader fortress, for those of you who are interested in history and archaeology.

Tefen Fortress

How to get there? Drive on Road 85 towards Kiryat Shmona. At the Karmiel junction, turn left towards Tefen/Ma’alot. After the Levon Junction, there is a left turn towards Yarka to road 8544. After about 1 km there is a right turn to Yarka, about 10 meters after the turn on the right side there is a crossing for cows. The Tefen Fortress is the northern citadel from around 2100 years ago. Many remains can be identified including towers, a water reservoir, and many pottery. From the western tower, there is a view towards the north of the Tefen industrial area, Nahal Beit HaEmek, Gita Lapidot, and more… Climbing the citadel is not easy and takes about 20 minutes. Right next door you will find Kishor Winery and Stern Winery. What’s better than sitting in one of the wineries and enjoying a meal and a glass of wine after (or before) the trip?! Horvat Kev Archeological Garden + Yitzhak Rabin Park

How to get there? Horvat Kev is in the middle of the Rabin neighborhood in Karmiel. Drive on Road 85 from Akko towards Kiryat Shmona and turn right at the western entrance of Karmiel to Road 784. After a kilometer turn right to Karmiel and on the Mota Gor bridge turn left towards the city center to Nashai Israel Street. About 100 meters after the first square turn right to the parking lot, from there walk about 50 meters inside Yitzhak Rabin Park. Horvat Kev is a site from the Byzantine period (1500 years ago). You can see a church with an original mosaic and a wine cellar. The whole complex is a monastery. You should combine the visit with a walk inside Rabin Park, which offers playgrounds, a roller rink, and many benches where you can have picnics.

Abirim Fortress

How to get there? Drive on Road 89 from Nahariya towards Mizrah/Safed. A little before Hurfeish, turn left on Road 8925 in the direction of Fassuta/Alkosh/Abirim. You pass Alkosh and Fassuta and a little before the entrance to Abirim there is a green sign with a cattle gate next to it. There you can park the car and start the route from there. Walk about 150 meters until you reach a sign that says Knights side, turn right there and after 50 meters you will arrive at the site. Masad Abirim dates from the Byzantine Roman period (2000-1500 years ago), built of huge stones. When climbing the walls of the building, a breathtaking view opens before us. The walk to Masad is through a Mediterranean forest where you can see blossoms before the season of the year and be impressed by oak trees and cattails.

Hasolelim Parking Lot

Slightly south of the movil junction, there is a new parking lot with wooden tables, a picnic area, and fountains. This is a peaceful corner to sit in for a pleasant picnic in the shade of the surrounding oaks and greenery, or go for a short stroll in the surrounding nature.

Yehi’am Convoy

South of the Kabri junction, in the heart of a green and shady grove, is a parking lot that is a combination of pleasant pastorality with a painful history of Palestine. In the parking lot are a series of original armored vehicles that constitute an impressive monument in memory of the victims of the Yechi’am convoy who fell in the War of Independence when they tried to break the siege of Yechi’am and the Western Galilee. In place is an accessible path, picnic tables and parking.

Lily Sharon Park

Across Napoleon Hill, the City of Akko has set up the Lily Sharon Park, a tourist attraction for couples, families or groups for a day of fun. Lily Sharon Park is located in a large, beautiful grove north of Ben Ami Street (Highway 85). The park serves as an outdoor recreation area with picnic tables scattered among the trees. In the center of the park, at its highest point, children’s playgrounds were placed. Among the options offered in the park are: play areas, walk-able trails, parking, picnic areas, fountains, toilets, amphitheater and event space. Entrance to the park is free of charge and no prior arrangement is required, as well as bus parking on site. Due to the park’s strategic location and proximity to several points of interest in Akko, the park can serve as a great base for breakfast, lunch or a haven from the heavy heat.

Hanita Forest

The Hanita Forest is spread along the slopes of the Western Galilee around Kibbutz Hanita. KKL-JNF planted the forest, which extends from Hanita to the town of Shlomi. At the top of the forest stands a reconstructed model of the Tower and Stockade site and a parking lot adapted for the disabled. A picnic area is at the bottom of the forest, near Shlomi. The Hanita Forest is planted on the western edge of the Sulam Tzur mountain range and covers 2,300 acres north of the town of Shlomi. The Jewish National Fund (JNF) began planting the forest in the 1940s. The first planters were the settlers in Hanita, who established the JNF lands as part of the Tower and Stockade Operation. In the spring, colorful vegetation blooms here that paints the forest in a multitude of colors and beautifully contributes to the Tower and Stockade site, observation sites, scenery and hiking trails that the JNF has prepared in the forest. Next to the tower is a recreational parking area which includes picnic tables and campfire areas, bbq stands, water fountains and is accessible to the disabled. In the lower part of the Hanita Forest, another parking area leads to a hiking trail to the Be’er Stream through the coniferous forest trees. In the forest there are additional paths that allow walking between tree orchards and seasonal blooms.

Kabri Archaeological Forest

Join a tour for the entire family in the Kabri Archaeological Park, which was recently commissioned by KKL-JNF. As part of the tour, we will visit an exhibition of archaeological finds and agricultural installations collected from ancient sites in the vicinity.

Parod River & Falls

Right at the foot of Mount Meron, a magical sight awaits you, Parod Falls. The stream flows only after the blessing rains of the winter and the magic of an easy trip is created! In summer and spring, you can enjoy the route that has turned into a dry and magical stream. The beginning of the stream is at Mount Hillel and its end is at the mouth of the Sea of Galilee. The trip in the stream is especially charming if you come after the autumn and winter rains. In the summer and spring, the route is also suitable, there will be no water in the river bed but you will discover the beauty of the stream from a different angle. The path is arranged up to the beautiful Parod waterfall, after which you will return to the car or you can walk a short distance to the course of the flow of the stream down the mountain. The beginning of the route is on a dirt road, next to the picnic parking lot, by the western bank Later on, the route becomes a little steep, crosses the river channel, and continues on the east bank. After about one km, the blue path reaches the fence of Moshav Shafer, where the route ends, you can do the route in both directions. For the perfect picnic – stock up a good bottle of wine from the Lotem Winery in the nearby Kibbutz Lotem.

Ha-Pisga Trail

The peak of Mount Meron, the highest mountain in the Galilee, is surrounded by a path that serves as a crown. An abundance of Mediterranean vegetation accompanies the path and great views open up to the landscape below. A circular route suitable for the whole family. The route surrounds the peak of Mount Meron, the highest of the country’s peaks, with the exception of Hermon. The path allows viewing of the landscape from all directions. Along the way, there are balconies where it is convenient to enjoy the wide view of the mountains of the Upper Galilee and Lebanon, the Golan Heights and the Hermon, the coastal plain, and parts of the Lower Galilee. In winter, the peak is coated with snow, often boasting the blooming of yellow lilies, orchids, and other types of flowers. Enjoy a pleasant trip between an impressive landscape and wonderful blossoms, on one of the most beautiful short and circular hiking trails in Israel. Every season a surprise awaits you, due to the multitude of species of plants and the many orchids that bloom along the route. From the parking lot, the summit trail begins – a circular trail about 1.5 km long, suitable for the whole family. The trail surrounds Mount Meron, which is the highest of the country’s peaks, with the exception of Mount Hermon. Due to the great height of Meron, it has a lot of precipitation. The trail allows for a spectacular view of the Galilee! We recommend combining the trip with a tour of the Buza Ice Cream visitor center in Kibbutz Sasa.

Rocks Park

The Rocks Parl on the edge of Mount Sumei Reserve in the Western Galilee is a place entirely made by nature to show off: rocks in a variety of imaginary shapes rise in the heart of a developed Mediterranean forest. The park is nature’s invitation for the whole family to go for a walk! This is the time to wander among the rocks and trees of the forest, let the children play hide and seek with nature, and spend a little time in a unique landscape. A circular path (marked with a black marker) leaves the parking lot and curves inside the rock complex. The right way is to take a leisurely walk along the path, sit down on a bench by the side of the road, linger a bit for a photo, and spend about an hour here. Those who don’t have a lot of time will be able to finish the visit in 20 minutes. The rocks that build the park are limestone rocks that were formed as sedimentary rocks in the sea that covered the area in a geological period from about 90 million years ago. In places where considerable amounts of rainfall, the water slowly dissolves the rocks. Nature has time, and if the rocks are exposed to these conditions for a long time, they go through weathering and melting processes and gain different shapes. All that is left is to enjoy the sculpting work of nature and activate the imagination. Some see the rocks as dinosaurs, giant animals, columns, mushrooms, and many other strange shapes. For those interested, you can continue to the long route, the one-way route, that is, you must arrange for a collection vehicle at the end of the route (Rocks Park parking lot). The path passes through the heart of a wonderful green forest and from time to time provides “windows” to the view of the Peki’in Valley, the Druze villages of Kisra and Sumei, and the city of Ma’alot.

Lake Monfort

Monfort Lake, the first ecological park in Israel, is located in the heart of the Western Galilee. It is surrounded by green lawns and activity facilities; inviting families, groups and travelers to enjoy a variety of attractions, recreation and a fun vacation for all ages. Visitors will enjoy an ice-skating rink, a group camping site, kayaking and pedal boats, go-carting tracks, extreme terrain tours, a swimming pool, restaurants, buffets and lawns where you can enjoy a picnic, family time or simply enjoy a stroll in the pleasant sun.

Keshet Cave

The Keshet Cave (also known as the Rainbow Cave or Arch Cave) in the Galilee, is one of the most beautiful, natural wonders in the land of Israel. Not only is the large natural arch with the shallow cave beneath it a pleasure to see, it also attracts hundreds of extreme sports enthusiasts who like to rappel from the arch down to the cave floor below. The view from the top of the arch is breathtaking and is found up against the Israel-Lebanon border just a few kilometers from Rosh HaNikra and the warm Mediterranean Sea.

Goren Park

Goren Park extends into the heart of the Western Galilee grove and above the Kziv River. KKL-JNF established it in 1963 as the first and largest park in Israel that is a natural forest of oak, cultivated and nurtured its plants, built parking lots and opened hiking trails. The park stretches over 500 acres and offers hiking trails to the Kziv River Reserve, Ein Tamir and the Monfort Fortress. The park itself has walking paths for the whole family. Its spectacular green landscapes, with its variety of entertainment options, have made Goren Park one of the most important tours in Israel.

Botanical and Zoological Garden

The Botanical-Zoological Garden opened to the public in 2003, with a large diversity of animals and plants from all corners of the world. The site is an exciting attraction and recreation site for the whole family and combines experiential learning for all its visitors.

The Botanical Gardens

The garden presents a variety of vegetation in the basin of the Mediterranean. On its 21 acres in the northern part of the city of Akko you will find vegetation from the Atlas Mountains in northern Africa, from the Iberian forests, a variety of ancient species from the Canary Islands, eastern Mediterranean vegetation and, of course, plants from the coastal and Negev regions of Israel. The park includes attractions for the whole family: playgrounds, hiking trails, observation points, seating areas and a water fountain, where wide and comfortable paths are paved.
