Dr. Shelley-Anne Peleg: British police officer Edwin J. Bryant, nicknamed “Abu George”, or the ‘Knight of the Galilee’, operated in the Galilee and northern Israel during the Mandate period. He was the first British commander of the Akko prison, and was famous for fighting gangs of smugglers and robbers, and restoring a sense of security to the city. Douglas Duff, also a British officer, wrote a book about him with charming descriptions of Akko during the Mandate; the childhood of Mimi’s mother, whose family is very rooted in Old Akko.
