Painted Iron: New Exhibition at the Monio Gallery
The exhibition “Painted Iron” presents a unique encounter between hard and heavy materials and an imaginary, colorful, and lively world. Familiar Disney characters, painted in a unique and expressive style, are given a new and different look here ― alongside colorful and dynamic sculptures that combine iron and other materials. The cold industrial material is given new life, moving between sculpture and painting, and telling a story of rebirth. The art of recycling, which is the basis of the work of the two artists, carries with it a statement that is more relevant than ever. In an era of endless consumption, it offers a different perspective ― to see waste, leftovers and rejected parts as a source of beauty, inspiration, and new life. From iron to wood, from car parts to traditional textures, the exhibition poses a question about human-material relations and emphasizes the creative power inherent in recycling. Alongside this, the influence of the “ready-made” tradition is evident – that artistic practice that began in the early 20th century with Marcel Duchamp, and challenged the boundaries between “useful object” and “art object”. Here too, discarded objects are given a new context, opening up a conversation about culture, identity, and everyday life. The works of the artists in the exhibition also echo the work of Gabriel Serrano, the Spanish-American artist, who combines familiar figures from the world of celebrities and popular culture in his paintings alongside colorful and abstract simplicity. Like him, here too the frameworks are broken: childish figures receive a personal, charged and lively interpretation, and are transformed from a light entertainment tool into expressive portraits with emotional power. Two Artists & Two Languages Merge Nati Romi, an industrial designer and workshop owner in the Western Galilee, creates sculptural works from iron and recycled car parts. In his work, industrial materials come to life in color and form, taking on a human and emotional character. Omri Palmai, an artist and designer from the Galilee, paints colorful and free-form figures using liquid acrylic techniques, and also incorporates recycled wood in his work in the “Indian” style. His works bring a playful and lively energy to the canvas and space. Together, they create a new visual world in which painted iron, recycled materials, and familiar figures are charged with fresh meaning – inviting the viewer to re-experience the magic hidden in the material and image.
