Time Embroidered
Curator: Nurit Wolpe
Gallery Director: Efrat Peled Sade
The exhibition “Time Embroidered” features embroidery works by female artists who embroider under the guidance of textile artist Sarah Avnin Genisher. The artists meet once a month for artistic dialogue, work critiques, and joint embroidery.
For a long time, embroidery was considered a feminine and domestic craft and was not part of the traditional definition of “high art.” Women were responsible for most embroidery work as part of household chores or as a hobby that met a functional need.
During the 20th century, with changes in social perception, the rise of feminism and the emergence of many female artists, who chose to make embroidery a means of deep personal expression, embroidery became an art that is today considered a field of great creative and cultural value.
Embroidery is another way to raise social issues, reveal emotions, and tell a story.
The exhibition allows for a new and different look at the concept of labor in embroidery. The exhibition features works that honor tradition while breaking boundaries and expressing themselves in contemporary language and issues
