Tefen Fortress is a historic northern citadel dating back over 2,100 years to the Hellenistic period. The site features remarkable archaeological remains, including ancient towers, a large carved water reservoir, and scattered historical pottery.
Reaching the summit requires an adventurous, moderately steep 20-minute hike, rewarding visitors at the western tower with sweeping views of the Tefen Industrial Park, Nahal Beit HaEmek, and the surrounding Galilean landscape.
Directions & Local Wineries
To reach the trailhead, drive on Road 85 toward Kiryat Shmona and turn left at Karmiel Junction onto Road 854 toward Tefen/Ma’alot. Pass Levon Junction, turn left toward Yarka onto Road 8544, and after 1 km turn right toward Yarka; the trailhead path (marked by a cattle guard crossing) appears on your right after about 10 meters. After exploring the fortress, relax at nearby boutique spots like Kishor Winery or Stern Winery to enjoy local wines and meals (prior reservation required).
